The Federal Republic of Nigeria and Republic of Gabon emerged from different colonial tutelage. Nigeria was colonized by Great Britain while Gabon was under French domination. The rivalry and mutual suspicion which existed between the two European countries impacted on these colonies and this in part explains the often-cautious relations between Nigeria and Gabon. Nigeria and Gabon established diplomatic relations at Ambassadorial level in 1970. The cordial relations led to the signing of many Bilateral Agreements in 1981 on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, Bilateral Air Service Agreement, Education and Cultural Cooperation, Trade Agreements among others.
